What Happened To February?

Time flies! I put off my blog entry only to realised that it’s already March. Gosh! What happened in Fabruary? Well, I wasn’t feeling so good health wise and long story short, after 43 years of life, I now am on BP medications. Well, life goes on. 

On to the more interesting things. My first Baby Announcement Pillow order for the year. I am now doing the embroidery onto cotton drill material. It’s sturdier and takes on the embroidery well; less puckering. To order, drop me a line at rozirahman@gmail.com or whatsapp me: 0122038117. I’ve been using Silhouette Portrait for almost 2 years now and have been under the radar. Then one day, Zila Kasim asked me about Cameo and I gave her my opinion. She went and got herself one and asked me to come over and teach her. I am always happy to share with a fellow crafter and we had a pleasant afternoon discovering the Cameo3.

Immediately Zila asked if I would like to do a demo because she sees the potential of Cameo3 for the crafters. I jumped at the idea and we arranged a collaboration for a Demo Party to be held at her studio, LamanSeniZilaKasim.

There was a decent turn out and we had fun. Gathering with like minded people is alway refreshing.

The Cameo3 and Portrait was very well received and I’ve taken the initiative to become a non exclusive distributor for Silhouette Malaysia. I’ve also managed to get a Kutu group going for both Cameo3 and Portrait. More info and updates on my Instagram and Facebook page: madebyrozirahman.

I was at Spotlight The Mines on 18-19 February, helping out with the Super Sewing Weekend. I made some simple hand puppet sample for the sewing challenge. The templates are from here.

This is the picture of the lucky winner whose baby I helped pacify when he was screaming his head off while mommy trying to sew a hand puppet. Love having that brief moment with a baby again, even it’s someone else’s baby.

I started to collaborate with a very creative friend who makes hantaran for engagements and weddings. My contribution is the card tag on the hantaran :) If you’re interested in her work, check out her instagram: ryta_khan. This talented lady does flower arrangements and fabulous cakes too.

 Arwen got invited to a classmate birthday party on a week night. The invitation was broadcasted by her class teacher and I made a quick birthday present for her friend. A simple cotton drill bag (unlined) with personalisation of her name with HTV. A small note from the giver on the inside of the bag. I do take orders for customisation. A simple bag like this would start at RM25.00. Drop me a line if you wish to order.

So, that pretty much wrap up my February. I now find a renewed reason to keep my blog active. As I age, I find keeping records help my failing memory. I will keep on archiving my activities here in the blog for my personal reference. I’m glad if you finds my blog read-worthy. I don’t get much of a response from my blog so I won’t know if anybody actually do read them. 

Ramadhan Kareem

A few more days before Ramadhan. Alhamdulillah, all my telekung kanak-kanak Fatimah al-Zahra pre-orders have been shipped out. Thank you to the lovely mommies for your support. May your daughters bring joy and coolness to your hearts and may they become good muslimahs, InsyaAllah.

Telekung Class @ Putrajaya

A good motivation to get my husband to clear his things in the living room is to announce that I will be having a small telekung class at home. He cleaned up very good that my son said that the house looks like we just moved in.

Anyway, my first kelas telekung in Putrajaya happened last Tuesday, 24 May 2016 in my humble abode. I only opened the class for 2 pax. My house is small so I can't squeeze in too many students. The plus point is that it's very personal.

Class started at 9.30 and everything was smooth sailing that we're done by lunch time; which goes extremely well with these mommies as they can go back to their babies sooner than planned.

I even cooked lunch for the class! Coming from a person who doesn't fancy cooking, that's a big deal! Hahaha. A simple lunch of white rice, chicken curry, stir-fried vegetables and sambal goreng ikan bilis is what I can put on the table for my guests.

I've also given Naza Arwen's telekungs for her daughters. They are a bit worn out because she did use them frequently when she was in kindy but they are still good enough for a few more wear. The girls were estatic from the picture Naza tagged me in her instagram.

 Giving these telekung away is also a motivation for me to make new ones for Arwen. Currently she's left with one usable pair; the one I did when I attended Kelas Telekung Kanak-kanak conducted by Teacher Azian at Shah Alam Community College. I need to make at least 2 pairs for her to rotate for school and for the coming Ramadhan.

I'm clearing up my back-log of telekung kanak-kanak Fatimah al-Zahra orders and hope to squeeze in hers, إن شاء الله

3 Reasons Why You Want To Learn To Make Your Own Telekung

I am following Azrai around today so that he can send me to check some leather afterwards. So, to make the most of my time, I'm blogging on the go on my mobile.

3 reasons why you want to learn to make your own telekung:

1. Custom to fit : I have my share of ill-fitting telekung and sometimes they don't come cheap. It's frustrating when you've paid a lot of money only to have it ill-fitting. In my class, I'll be sharing tips to to measure and custom fit the telekung.

2. A useful skill : as muslimah, especially in Malaysia, and in Asia generally, we still put on telekung (prayer robe) to pray. Once you've learned the skill, not only you can make one for your own use, but you can make one for your mom, sisters, daughters and friends. You can make and give it as birthday present, anniversary present and even wedding present and it will be greatly treasured and appreciated.

3: Potential source of income : you can not only make and give the telekung as gidt, but you can sell them too. There is always a market for good quality telekung . On top of that, I am not just talking about financial gains but the potential reward (pahala) you gain by making them, having someone wear them for prayers, ماشاءالله

Kelas Jahit Telekung

I started conducting Telekung Classes last October and الحمد لله the fifth batch completed their class last Sunday, 17 January 2016. The above is my advertisement poster posted on my Facebook page and Instagram account.

The class is conducted at Kak Umi’s Studio in USJ 4 in a casual surrounding. For comfort, I only take 6 participants per class. Some of the pre-requisites are:

• Must bring your own sewing machine
• This is not a beginner’s class, Must have some basic sewing knowledge
• Bring your own material: Cotton is recommended as it’s easier for beginner to handle. Once you’ve learned the techniques, you can choose other material of your choice

What you will get from this class:

• Paper pattern
• Lunch is provided and free flow of plain water and tea
• Opportunity to make new friends :)
• A freebie; I try to slip a freebie for all participants. So far, I’ve been able to do so. Just a little token to remember me by. I’ve given pincushions, pattern weights and pouches.

May Allah bless her for the knowledge she has shared with me and many others. 2015 Round Up

I’m seeing a trend here. When new  year comes, I make a resolution to blog more regularly. Last year, it lasted until April before my blog took a back seat for the rest of the year. This year, hopefully I can stick to my resolution by putting it down in my journal. (that’s something I can blog about - my Bullet Journal discoveries)

May - My recording for Safiyya went on air a day after I got back from Seoul; Mother’s Day.

June - my 2nd ACG Annual Meeting. Alway a fun gathering

September - A quilted bag class with Tuji San from Brother Japan at Brother Malaysia Headquarters

September - A new craft; quilling with Namizam Muda of Miezcraft at Scrap n Crop 

October - my biggest  splurge investment to date. Brother V3 Embroidery machine

October - My first telekung class. 

October - The longest and most tiring bazaar to date; My handy creation bazaar organized by Brother Malaysia. I shared a booth with Mastura of WhimsicalnQuirky

October - Participated in a 4 day craft workshop for Festival Sastera Kanak-Kanak organized by Perbadanan KotaBuku together with WhimsicalnQuirky and SekociNorlie.

November - My column contribution for Anis; November 2015 Issue

November - Appeared in the craft segment for Assalamualaikum, morning talk show on TV Al-Hijrah. This is me with the program host.

December - A craft workshop with the children of PPZ’s staff.

Wow! What a year it has been. Many great moments. 

What’s in store for 2016? Many more great opportunities I hope and a new craft to learn? I have a leather craft class this weekend. I’ll blog about it after the class and tell you how it went; that is if anybody is interested.

As for now, two weeks into 2016, it’s still not too late to wish everybody a Happy New Year! May 2016 be a year of success and great achievements, إن شاء الله.

March 2014 Round Up

Wow! Time really flies. I was just thinking of doing a March Round up of events when I realise that April is about to end soon too... OK let’s keep that for the next post. Now for the round up:

I covered LKPIM WP Putrajaya’s 3rd Annual General Meeting as a photographer. This shot was taken with a tripod and a timer. Not too shabby for an amateur picture taker, huh? The sewing part was my LKPIM uniform that I sewed a few days before the meeting. Can you spot me in the picture?
By the way, LKPIM stands for Lembaga Kebajikan Perempuan Islam Malaysia. Do follow them on Facebook here. I help manage the page with other admins.

Then, we got our second folding bike. This is a splurge. A friend helped us get one back from Taipei. Here’s me and Hubster taking it on it’s maiden ride in Putrajaya. All 24km or so. We were caught in the act by some friends who stopped by the road side and took pictures as evidence :)

We lost MH370. To date, it is still missing...

I’ve made some more telekungs. I’ve been focusing on telekungs nowadays. Orders came pouring in, Alhamdulillah and I’ve decided to buy my white cotton fabric by the bolt. I went to Jalan Kenanga and got me a bolt. Here’s some of my little customers with their telekung. I’m into making posters with PicArt apps on iPhone and post them on my Instagram. There was also a birthday party that we attended. Zharif and Qistina. I made a personalised embroidered towel for Zharif and a smocked dress for his sis.

and trying to have a small herbs garden of a sort. I toyed with the self watering system as we didn’t get much rain in March. My chill plant was just sprouting and I didn’t want it to die out of dryness in case I forget to water them so at least the system could last for a few days. 

And to wrap up the month of March, the Hot Air Balloon festival was is town. I just took some shots with my iPhone before going for my Saturday morning ride with my buddies :)
